Episode 1: ...Or Die Trying

This was a pretty nice premiere episode to start off Season 2. The trailer for Soul Plane 2: The Blackjacking! was a humorous way to begin the episode.

Pros: The Soul Plane Trailer, The Lynching Scene, Most of the jokes and Uncle Ruckus with Nunchucks.

Cons: Voices were somewhat awkward; Episode seemed a bit empty and unfinished

Episode 2: Tom, Sarah and Usher

Hilarious! Funnier than the last, and even the last one was funny. Everything just seemed to fall into place, except for one minor flaw.

Pros: Tom's Music Video (BIG pro here.), A Pimp Named Slickback, Riley and Uncle Ruckus' cracks on Tom

Cons: Unsatisfactory Ending; didn't close the episode very well

"Thank you for not Snitching"'s preview already was out last night during commercial of Tom, Sarah, and Usher. Riley seems to have gotten himself into trouble with Ed and Rummy stealing Granddad's car. More information will be uncovered later on.

"Stinkmeaner Strikes Back" Is the official name for the episode; not "The Return of Stinkmeaner", according to the website. This episode is about Stinkmeaner's spirit rising from Hell and taking over Tom's body, most likely to get revenge on Robert Freeman. Again, this is all that's uncovered for the time being.

AARON McGRUDER, the Artist Formerly Known as the Angriest Black Man in America, can't stop smiling.

In fact, he's busting up, bobbing and weaving as he reacts to the animation unfolding on his living room wall big screen. It's from the new season of "The Boondocks," the adaptation of his button-pushing hip-hop-flavored newspaper strip, centered on 10-year-old black militant Huey Freeman and his gangsta-wannabe younger brother Riley, who have to move from Chicago to live with their gruff grandfather in the suburbs.

The appearance of one of the show's breakout characters, Uncle Ruckus, a foul-mouthed black man who hates black people, makes the slim, unassuming McGruder laugh so hard that his outburst fills the room in his hilly West Los Angeles home, even with the volume turned up to near ear-splitting levels. He's further amused by his cartoon's caricatures of Larry King, Bill Cosby and pundit Ann Coulter.

A mash-up of in-your-face urban humor and Korean-drawn anime that became one of the flagships of the edgy Adult Swim late-night lineup on Cartoon Network,"The Boondocks" returns Oct. 8 for its second season after a roughly two-year break.

The first season lighted fuses even before its debut. The Rev. Al Sharpton and other black activists were angered by the show's liberal use of the N-word, charging that the word is inappropriate for humor.

Since he launched the strip in 1999, "The Boondocks" has been an all-consuming passion that has taken McGruder to emotional peaks and troughs. But on this day, despite the frenzy of last-minute tinkering and adjustments, he seems at peace with himself and his creation.

"It's just a much better show than last season," he says, rubbing his hand through his closely cropped hair. "It looks so much better, the performances are better, everything is just coming together. It's just so much more satisfying, and we're much closer to the goal of what I think the show can be."

But to reach this moment of contentment, McGruder, 33, decided that he needed to pay a heavy price -- giving up the vehicle that not only brought him national fame and celebrity but had been the driving force of his life since college. In order to be happier with "The Boondocks -- The TV Show," he had to let go of "The Boondocks -- The Strip."

He quit his daily satirical platform, which was syndicated in more than 300 newspapers nationwide, including the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post. His abrupt and unexpected departure shocked fans, and McGruder had few explanations as he crept from public view, turning down invitations for talk shows and speaking engagements.

"I wanted to hang on to both, but ultimately I made the decision that the show could not be sacrificed," McGruder says. "Once I decided that, it was an easy decision, even if it cost me. I didn't want to do the strip badly and the show badly."

McGruder is still haunted by the memories of bouncing between supervising a complex animated series and churning out a seven-day-a-week strip. The ordeal of juggling both gigs nearly crushed him. He was unhappy with the early storyboards and artwork on the series, and he was increasingly frustrated by the relentless delays, snafus and difficulties of working with an overseas studio.

"There's only one word for that first season -- insanity," he says. "It was just a horrible situation. I hadn't worked one day of TV in my life, and all of a sudden I'm running my own show. I didn't know when you work on an animated show that there's a crisis every week. Only the first year working on the strip alone was harder." What's more, McGruder admits he's a lot less confrontational. "I was absolutely a [jerk]. There were certain things that I gave up -- patience, sleep. I was under so much pressure. I took myself too seriously."

From this distance, he's far from dissatisfied with the inaugural season -- the series represented the realization of a lifelong dream, and it earned solid ratings for Adult Swim -- the home of off-the-wall fare such as "Robot Chicken" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" -- and a fan base that hailed McGruder at last summer's Comic-Con.

More significant, "The Return of the King," an episode about Dr. Martin Luther King's reversal of his "turn the other cheek" philosophy after awakening from a 32-year coma and witnessing bling-wearing rappers and raunchy images on BET, scored him a Peabody Award for "distinguished achievement and meritorious service."

Now, the cartoonist who once bragged about calling Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice a "murderer" to her face and who has taken on BET, the Bush administration and the Democratic Party, is emerging gradually from his self-imposed exile. He's still intensely private -- McGruder does not discuss his personal life, and don't expect to see him pop up on "The View" or other shows to promote his series.

But his "dark side" has lightened up considerably in sync with his satisfaction over "The Boondocks." In addition to working with his team -- a dedicated collection of writers and artists who share his vision -- the key difference was giving up the strip. "If I have achieved anything, it's not so much financial independence but to give myself the opportunity to relax, to not stretch myself too thin," he says. "If I'm happy, it's because I'm happy with the show. I was not cut out to be a cartoonist in a newspaper. Doing it on their terms was not working."

He's also easier to work with. Regina King, who provides the voice of both Huey and Riley, says, "Aaron is still stressed, but I think he's a bit more comfortable with his ideas. He provokes thought without hitting people over the head."

But those who think the return also marks the mellowing of Aaron McGruder had better think again. The 15 new episodes will continue to take caustic potshots at current events, rappers, race relations and the state of black popular culture. A stinging parody of "Soul Plane," the much-criticized movie that features Snoop Dogg and Mo'Nique, is a highlight of the first installment.

A rapper named Thugnificent moves into the neighborhood where the Freemans live and turns the suburban area upside down. Uncle Ruckus, who calls blacks "monkeys" and worse, gets his own reality show and will become even more vindictive against his race. There's also an episode dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

And if Sharpton was upset over last season's use of the N-word, he might consider polishing his marching shoes. It even gets its own episode: "The N-Word," in which it is uttered continuously.

Said Rodney Barnes, co-executive producer of "The Boondocks: "You can't bury [the N-word]. It's like a vampire. It's going to live forever. And we can't let the fans down. Why be responsible now?"

Addressing an overflow crowd of "The Boondocks" fans at Comic-Con, McGruder said he would be happy to march alongside Sharpton. "His job is to get me thrown off the air, and I will try to help," he quipped. "He's right. I must be stopped." The hall filled with cheers.

Network and studio executives involved with "The Boondocks" show little concern about a potential "Boondocks" controversy. "That word is such a part of 'The Boondocks,' " said Adult Swim Senior Vice President Mike Lazzo. "I asked Aaron about it, and he said, 'I'm making my show.' We heard all these things about how horrible it was before we put on 'Return of the King,' and then when I watched it, it was the greatest thing I've seen. I hear from our fans -- and they're very vocal fans -- and I have never heard that criticism."

And Jeanie Bradley, executive vice president of current programming for Sony Pictures Television, which produces the series, says the visual and creative quality of the show should override reservations about its more pointed content: "It's funnier than it's ever been, and the rhythm is just so right. Aaron really has something to say, and he's definitely found his groove."

CONSIDERABLE UPSET

McGRUDER'S urge to use his "Boondocks" characters to speak out about politics and culture has animated him since his days at the University of Maryland, when he first sent packages of the cartoon to various newspaper syndicates. The strip was a reflection of his affection for artists such as KRS-One and Public Enemy, who used rap to express their strong political views.

The strip made McGruder famous, and infamous. He turned up often on "Real Time With Bill Maher" and other talk shows. His "Boondocks" collections were bestsellers, and he was a popular speaker on college campuses. The NAACP gave him an Image Award.

He also caused considerable upset. The Washington Post once pulled a week of strips making fun of Rice and her love life. And a few papers yanked strips when he blasted the wave of patriotism after the start of the Iraq war.

Moving "The Boondocks" from the newspaper to the small screen has meant artistic sacrifices: The newspaper strip skewered daily events, while the targets of the series have to be much broader. And the show is aimed at a younger audience. Many of the show's followers at Comic-Con, a racially diverse group composed mostly of fans in their 20s and 30s, seemed to be unaware that "The Boondocks" ever existed as a strip.

"I have to find out what's relevant in this audience's world, to find the balance between what I want to talk about and what they want to hear," McGruder said.

He was determined to hang on to his daily strip even while taking on the rigors of the first season: "I just always thought of the strip as lifetime employment. It was too valuable a thing for me to give up. I just couldn't walk away from something that was so incredibly hard to get." But continuing with the daily "Boondocks" meant taking precious time away from the series, which was encountering numerous hurdles.

Said McGruder: "I had neither the time or the interest to follow the news in great detail like I have to do when dealing with the strip. Plus, I see the demise of newspapers, the erosion of circulation, and I thought, 'Is this really a secure job? Comics may not last forever.' "

And doing the strip stopped being fun. "After the reelection of Bush, I knew everything that was going to happen. And I wasn't the only one saying it. It was getting old."

He is looking forward to continuing the series past its second season, and he's even contemplating life beyond "The Boondocks." He's written a movie, saying only that it's a comedy. And there are preliminary plans for a "Boondocks" movie.

Huey and Riley might even wind up in a future version of a "Boondocks" strip. "I can go back and do the strip whenever I want to," he says. "Now I could go online, go wireless. There's a whole [new] distribution out there. So it's not necessarily gone."

As he enters his new phase, the Artist Formerly Known as the Angriest Black Man in America has no regrets over his often explosive past and interactions. "It was time to do those things. Some . . . needed to be said. I don't feel bad about any of it. I'm just glad I don't have to be that guy anymore."

Rappers Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne and Cee-Lo are among the many guests who'll appear on season two of "The Boondocks," which kicks off October 8 on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block. Busta Rhymes and Ghostface are two other musical guests slated to make cameos on the animated series, while Mos Def and MTV’s Sway will reprise their guest spots from last season.

Lil' Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Ghostface Killah and Cee-Lo Green are all set to lend their voices to the upcoming season of the animated series "The Boondocks."

The controversial show, which is based on the comic strip by Aaron McGruder, centers around a 10-year-old black radical named Huey Freeman, his younger, rap-obsessed, brother Riley (both voiced by Regina King), and their grandfather Robert "Granddad" Freeman (played by John Witherspoon).

Other celebrities who will lend their voices to the second season include Donald Faison ("Scrubs"), Mo'Nique ("The Parkers") and Tichina Arnold ("Everybody Hates Chris"). Mos Def, Xzibit, Charlie Murphy, MTV's Sway and Katt Williams, who all appeared in the debut season, will also be reprising their roles.

Highlights of the upcoming season include the family going to see "Soul Plane 2," A Pimp Named Slickback (voiced by Katt Williams) counseling the Freemans' neighbor who fears he is losing his wife to Usher, and Granddad feuds with a famous rapper named "Thugnificent" who moves into the neighborhood.

To summarize: Aaron McGruder has been through a lot with The Boondocks, but guarantees that Season 2 will be more than just great; It'll be something not easily forgotten. With this much optimism and hype, we can all be assured that Season 2 will be a great success!

- Morning Boondocks fans! I hope that things are going well for each and everyone of you guys. I know that things have been slow as this group is making a transition, but thank you for your patience. We are excited to get the group back on its feet and to get things active again. First, I want to say thanks to for all the hard work he has done with this group, and also for his continuing support. I am glad that he's still here to help the group continue on. I do want to give another thanks to 2nd in Command , for accepting the role in helping us with this group.

While things are still being worked out and deciding what our next step to take, I do want to inform the members that there is a fan strip on deviantArt. Constructed by and myself. We do plan to have it updated once a week for now, but as soon as we find our groove, hopefully it will be a bit more later on. We were inspired to do so after hearing that the original strip was back on hiatus, as well as in danger of being scrapped for good. So take a look, let us know what you think.

- Well, I'm glad that I put the club in good hands. I'm only a backup assistance/supporter. More like a deciding member than anything else. Hey, Boondockers. What's going on?

Well, as you may notice, this is my first update in close to 4 months. I know some of you are a bit upset because I have "disappeared". Well, the reason being is because I have been rather busy in my life.

I'll be upfront with you: I'm resigning as the President of the Club. Why?

Well, 50% of the reason is because I'm currently focusing on other parts of my life. Right now, I'm still pretty much without a plaace of my own and I'm currently jumping from place to place until things get better.

The other 50% is because I am not good as saying "enough is enough". I am (somewhat) known for taking on more than I can handle. Now, I gotten so much work on my plate, that I have to let some of my projects go.

And this is one of them. I have to focus on getting my main website and my life together.

Instead of posting to ask who want to take over, I've asked someone who's more active than I'm currently am on dA. And that's



I feel that he is capable of running the club on a weekly basis.

As for me, instead of stepping totally out of the picture, I'll be Advisor/Sponsor of the Club. I really want to put the contest together. So, when I have my own funds back up, the contest will be back on. But in the meantime, I won't be able to do much.

So, Mr. Controversial will be head of the club now while I'll have a less active part of the club.

I do hope that this club will be better than it was before.
